Celebrating a Glot of Linguists

The winning collective noun for linguists - a Glot of Linguists - fromthe Chartered Institute ofLinguists contest to find a term todescribe language professionals, was first announced at the Conference and is confirmed in the summer issue ofThe Linguist.

Froma shortlist of ten, ’s Awards & RecognitionCommittee, Council and Educational TrustBoard determined that ‘a glot of linguists’was the most apt phrase. Andrew Bruce andJustin Koprowski beat more than 40 entriesto the prize: tea at the House of Lords with President Jean Coussins.

“This is all about fun – but with a serious message too,” said Baroness Coussins, whocame up with the initiative. “Creativity, wit and wordplay are skills that linguists have in abundance, thanks to our exposure to other languages and cultures.”
